"No one can accurately predict which direction China will ultimately take. Even the best China hands have been surprised; therefore it would not be realistic to say the contributors know better.
One of my favorite sayings is "There is no such thing as a China Expert, only people with varying degrees of ignorance..." But one thing for certain is that foreign investment will play a role in shaping that ultimate outcome. Following the China Streetsmart approach, foreign investors will ensure they profit from China and China will profit from the wealth of experience they bring - an ideal win-win scenario. The positive effects FDI has had and will continue to have on China's future generations, who are far more openminded and adaptable than their predecessors, suggest a re-emerging China that is open to the world. This openness will not only be good for its own citizens, but also for the world." - Extracted from the Preface
China Streetsmart is an invaluable book for investors who desire to learn the secrets of award-winning businesses operating in China today. This book clears up the confusion and conflicting stories on what it takes to be successful in China by not postulating theory but rather giving investors practical and proven advice.
Concerned about corruption, protecting your intellectual property and whether or how to find the right local partner? China Streetsmart covers all these topics and more with real life examples to help China investors, both new and old, improve their effectiveness and ultimately create profitable businesses. - From quoting a reader
Target readers:
Entrepreneurs, managers, economists, MBA students who are interested in investing in China.

From the publisher
Learn how to set up and run profitable businesses in the most alluring market, China.
- Stays away from theories and focuses on practical advice from real professionals with proven results in China, which is easy to understand and follow.
- Learn from the best practices of effective China business executives.
This book is written for professionals by professionals who have worked in China for decades. The book does not stress theory about how business should be done but rather how business is done by some of the most successful business executives in China. The objective of the book is to pass on practical advice on how to be effective and more importantly, profitable in China.
Almost every foreign company has made mistakes in China and it is the objective of the book to not only show new investors how past mistakes can be prevented but also to help those already in the market learn how other executives handle similar challenges. Real life case studies are also explored in-depth to give investors a better understanding of the challenges one can expect to face and more importantly a way to resolve them.
China Streetsmart also examines China's outlook to give the investor a balanced view that the attractive opportunities WTO offers must be juxtaposed with the critical challenges such as how to tackle growing unemployment and pervasive corruption. Streetsmart investors are cautious optimists and within every risk there are also great opportunities to be capitalized on. The benefits of investing in China are real. The critical question is not whether one should invest in China but rather how. This book will show you the way.

China Streetsmart is the only book I have read that explains practical and effective secrets learnt from on-the-ground experience coupled with a deep understanding of Chinese history and ideology. This book provides you with a framework on how to deal with problems, how to make profits and how to set the long term risk and investment strategy.
China Streetsmart is not only meant for new or western investors, but it also stimulates executives with several years of China experience to rethink their issues in a different way. The book is original in approach, written for people who want to capitalise on the opportunities that exist in China today and the next decade. |

As an sales and marketing director with experience in setting up and managing FMCG businesses in some different countries, this book is my essential guide for entering the chinese market: 1)due to the fact, that it combines the strategical dimension of setting up new business together with a list of Do's and Don'ts when entering this very challenging market 2)it reminds us, that all business has an economical as well as a people dimension. This human / cultural side of the business is very well explained based on personal experience of a lot of chinese and foreign managers as well as on the broad and hands on experience of the autor himself. 3) This book shows you a lot of different cases among different industries, which helps you to find out, which case could be most similar to your own business and which experience I could learn and take advantage of.
My conclusion: if you are setting up a new business, looking for opportunities in the chinese market place and like to avoid the most common mistakes other people have already made thousand of times, this book is the back-to-basics manifesto for you! |

I've been doing business with China now for over 8 years but recently I was asked to bring a small group of fellow business associates to China, since I was considered the "Expert". While I know my business well I certainly would not call myself an expert so I went and ask some other friends for a recommendation for a good book that we all could easily understand. A friend that lives and works in China, recommended China Streetsmart and since reading the book I can definitely say its a great guide and has even given me new ideas how to improve my own business with China.
Other China books I've come across have been too superficial. I can easily recommend others to read this book. Its easy to understand yet very helpful in helping me apply my know how in a "Chinese" way. Kudos to the author! |

I read John Chan's title after finishing a 9 year expat assignment in China. I was reading numerous publications on the subject to see how other's experiences compared with my own. Other books covered the typical topics with stories to illustrate the points, but I found many of them dated to the China of today, and too generalized. China is on a rapid pace of change and the practices & customs vary significantly by local area. "China Streetsmart" was current, accurately portrayed the regional dynamics of the China business environment, and offered widely applicable & fundamental guidelines to be successful. The recounting of real life experiences were so true to my own, it was uncanny. I only wish I had John's book 9 years ago. If your company or yourself are going to China, then make this book a prerequisite. There's not a single book out there that will prepare you for every situation, but if you read just one, I highly recommend "China Streetsmart" by John Chan. Take it from someone who has been there, the better you're prepared, the better your results. |
