China Streetsmart is the only book I have read that explains practical and effective secrets learnt from on-the-ground experience coupled with a deep understanding of Chinese history and ideology. This book provides you with a framework on how to deal with problems, how to make profits and how to set the long term risk and investment strategy.
China Streetsmart is not only meant for new or western investors, but it also stimulates executives with several years of China experience to rethink their issues in a different way. The book is original in approach, written for people who want to capitalise on the opportunities that exist in China today and the next decade. |

As an sales and marketing director with experience in setting up and managing FMCG businesses in some different countries, this book is my essential guide for entering the chinese market: 1)due to the fact, that it combines the strategical dimension of setting up new business together with a list of Do's and Don'ts when entering this very challenging market 2)it reminds us, that all business has an economical as well as a people dimension. This human / cultural side of the business is very well explained based on personal experience of a lot of chinese and foreign managers as well as on the broad and hands on experience of the autor himself. 3) This book shows you a lot of different cases among different industries, which helps you to find out, which case could be most similar to your own business and which experience I could learn and take advantage of.
My conclusion: if you are setting up a new business, looking for opportunities in the chinese market place and like to avoid the most common mistakes other people have already made thousand of times, this book is the back-to-basics manifesto for you! |

I've been doing business with China now for over 8 years but recently I was asked to bring a small group of fellow business associates to China, since I was considered the "Expert". While I know my business well I certainly would not call myself an expert so I went and ask some other friends for a recommendation for a good book that we all could easily understand. A friend that lives and works in China, recommended China Streetsmart and since reading the book I can definitely say its a great guide and has even given me new ideas how to improve my own business with China.
Other China books I've come across have been too superficial. I can easily recommend others to read this book. Its easy to understand yet very helpful in helping me apply my know how in a "Chinese" way. Kudos to the author! |

I read John Chan's title after finishing a 9 year expat assignment in China. I was reading numerous publications on the subject to see how other's experiences compared with my own. Other books covered the typical topics with stories to illustrate the points, but I found many of them dated to the China of today, and too generalized. China is on a rapid pace of change and the practices & customs vary significantly by local area. "China Streetsmart" was current, accurately portrayed the regional dynamics of the China business environment, and offered widely applicable & fundamental guidelines to be successful. The recounting of real life experiences were so true to my own, it was uncanny. I only wish I had John's book 9 years ago. If your company or yourself are going to China, then make this book a prerequisite. There's not a single book out there that will prepare you for every situation, but if you read just one, I highly recommend "China Streetsmart" by John Chan. Take it from someone who has been there, the better you're prepared, the better your results. |

I am a cross-cultural professional with over 20 years in the field. I've just returned from a trip to China and am now in the process of expanding my practice into the China field given my clients needs to also expand there. I've since read a lot of China books, including Chinese Business Etiquette & One Billion Customers and China Streetsmart is by far the best book I've read which accurately highlights the cultural challenges business executives go through when entering a new market.
I especially like the point the author makes about the importance of integrating the family in an overseas move since a businessperson's success can be strongly influenced by the home environment. Most business books tend to stress the transaction forgeting that often its the process on how its derived which will determine the long term success.
The author's no nonsense approach to China has helped demystify many of the confusing stories I heard about what it takes to succeed in China. Now that I've been there I understand even more clearly and have now started to recommend this book to all my clients. |

My company is expanding operations in Mainland China and I've been asked to oversee the expansion. I was keen to start reading up as much as I could on China. I've read a lot before and had even been to China a few times in the past as a backpacker 15 years ago. Much has changed about China from when I first went there and I can appreciate how hard it is to keep up with all the changes.
I asked a friend of mine who is an executive already living and working in China for many years and he recommended I read China Streetsmart as a good primer for what I was about to encounter. I love this book! It's small enough I can carry it around with me and easy enough to read I don't need to read it cover to cover rather I've ear marked the sections that are most relevant to my situation and keep going back to review it as a good guide.
What I like best about this book is its not trying to tell me I need to become Chinese rather I simply need to learn how to apply what I already know which is how to be a shrewd businessman and keep focusing on the bottom line of why my company chose to go to China in the first place - to make money.
So far everything the author has written about I've experienced as well so its easy to relate and give this a thumbs up recommendation! |

China Streetsmart was a fantastic find for me. I loved the well-researched and complete approach to explaining entry into the Chinese marketplace. On a personal level it helped me to better understand my Chinese-Canadian business contacts and on a professional level opened my eyes to worlds of information yet to be learned. I recommended this book often to students when teaching in a community college system-it demonstrates so well how the American bias in business can be deadly for companies that really want to go global. Now in my work as a professional coach I recommend this book to those who think they can just "pop" into the Chinese market and make a quick buck as well as to those thoughtful executives who want to see how much more there is to learn about global business in this new century. I especially like the holistic approach that Mr. Chan brings to his work. He explains that business success includes understanding the history and culture of your Chinese partners and customers as well as sound fundamentals.
I found this book after an exhaustive Internet search, as I was involved in a group discussing expanding an idea into China. Like any good research it answers lots of questions and generates even more. I hope to see some follow-up work available in the market one day. Anyone who is considering putting money or time into a Chinese business venture should read this book first. I would also suggest that managers and students who see their careers moving towards international and global concerns read it as well. |

I am currently reading this book for the second time and can safely say that this book is unlike any other that I have read. The information is layed out in an organized fashion and is filled with real-life experiences and situations that the author, Mr. Chan has dealt with in his extensive experience in the business world of China.
It is a great book for college students, professionals and seasoned managers. Highly recommended! |
