Bill Cosby talks common sense and creates a much needed dialogue in America about the crisis in the black community and for that matter most of the inner city. He explains that five out of six children were born into a two-parent home in 1950 versus less than two out of six today. He goes on to write that there are whole blocks without a responsible male to watch over wayward sons. Without the "complete" family and in particular the father figure, boys go from bad behavior to worse once they enter school and even more so once they reach their teenage years and are void of any role models and authority figures they respect.
Cosby goes on to advise people to avoid the victim mentality that keeps so many people from taking full responsibility for their own lives and placing it on the system. The book covers ideas on disciplining the children; how to inspire them; how to save the schools and helpful tips, such as keeping TVs out of the bedrooms.
Mr. Cosby is writing things that are only controversial amongst the most "progressive" individuals of our society. Here are a few important ones: "Parenting works best when both a mother and a father participate... A house without a father is a challenge. A Neighborhood without fathers is a catastrophe, and that's just about what we have today."
"There is another thing that little boys don't do any more: go to church." Church was a place where "we learned self-control, and we knew the consequences if we didn't."
"When the boys are suspended or expelled-admit it, parents- there is usually a good reason."
"One of the advantages that African-American kids have over most people in the world is the ability to speak English. It's the international language of business. To be a success on the globe, you have to speak it. But we're letting this advantage slip away too. Many of our kids don't want to speak English."
"Ninety-four percent of all black people who are murdered are murdered by other black people."
There are so many good quotes on the book and so many inspirational solutions that it makes it difficult to summarize such good information. Read the book, it's worth it.
Mr. Cosby book is relevant for ALL parents, since the problem, although more marked in the black community is pervasive in society at large. He says things that need to be said and that are unfortunately being largely ignored by the so called "black leaders". These "black leaders" are more interested in perpetuating the victim mentality that allows them to stay relevant, then fixing the problem.
The rise of out of wedlock children is largely due to the strong presence of the government in the lives of its citizens. In many cases, government programs have, unfortunately, taken the place of the father, from an economic standpoint and thus have eliminated his need to be a provider and his much needed example, especially for young boys. It is ironic that the same programs that were promulgated as beneficial to the inner cities and minorities have held those same people back and have created a dependency and an addiction that is hard to break. There are success stories, to be sure, with such programs, but the overall effect on society as a whole, and minorities in particular, has been disastrous.
Dr. Cosby has written a very important book and I believe it is a necessary read for anyone looking to understand the core problems with the fabric of society. Enjoy!

Bill Cosby Biography :
Comedian, writer, television producer. Born William Henry Cosby on July 12, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rather than repeat the tenth grade, he left school and joined the navy. While attending Temple University on an athletic scholarship, he appeared at New York's Gaslight Cafe (1962), where his comic routines were so successful that he left college to pursue a career in entertainment.
In 1965, Cosby became the first African American actor to star in a weekly television dramatic series, I Spy (1965–8), winning two Emmys as an undercover Central Intelligence Agency agent. Later series were The Bill Cosby Show (1969–71), The New Bill Cosby Show (1972–3), and Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (1972–84). His interest in children and education led him to earn MA and EdD degrees at the University of Massachusetts and to incorporate many of his ideas and ideals in his work.
As obstetrician Cliff Huxtable in The Cosby Show (1984–1992), he projected a new image of middle-class African-American families, and the programme was one of the most popular and lucrative in television history. His gentle, wry clowning appealed to both children and adults, leading to a series of successful TV commercials, comedy records, and books, and making him one of the wealthiest people in the history of the American entertainment industry. Only his films failed to be money-makers.
In later years, Cosby has become a generous contributor to various causes and institutions, particularly Atlanta's Spelman College, and is often seen at track-and-field meets for amateur athletes, to which he also contributes. In 2003 he was honoured with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.
Cosby married his wife Camille in 1964, and the couple had five children, Erika Ranee, Erinn Chalene, Ensa Camille, Evin Harrah and Ennis William. Tragically, Ennis was shot to death while changing a flat tire on the side of a Los Angeles freeway in 1997.

It's interesting how the outdated philosophies of Marx and Stalin keep popping up when someone comes up with a truly rational and wise solution for helping people move into a better lifestyle as Cosby has done.
Class is merely a state of values. Cosby is promoting values of freedom, hard work, determination, with respect for self and for others. To say he is bourgeois, as some reviewers have implied, is utter nonsense. Cosby is desperately trying to help black people and all people. To say Cosby is in an alienated state of existence is just absurd. He is extremely wise and acutely aware of society's problems. He has very promising solutions, though not perfect, to the problems facing all communities as well as the black community.
When those with Cosby's approach come up with worthy solutions to improve society, the old left not only attacks the philosophy and the effort of these sincere people, but also attacks them personally. Roy Wilson has said we should all pray for Cosby's alienated state of existence. I think all of us should pray not for Cosby, who is doing just fine, but for those on the left who clearly are in a state of alienation and ignorance.
If we all take Cosby's approach seriously, the Man (tyranny) can't keep us down.... But the left (merely another form of the Man) definitely will !!! We all are striving for a good life without the Man. We certainly don't need to replace him with another Man : the left. Let freedom ring for all people. Listen to Cosby and know the truth is out there. |

I want to thank Bill for touching on a subject that is so important and critical today and for providing a way to turn it around. Personal responsibility people, lets not live a life full of blaming others for our problems. We need to be responsible and listen to our kids and make changes. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am about this book! Keep up the good work Bill and thanks for sharing your wisdom! |

Honestly, who better than to speak these far too often forgot truths than Bill Cosby. One of the greatest examples of proud, intelligent, respectable, and honorable black men in the last half century.
Black people (especially those with mindsets to the likes of Jackson, Sharpton, and other racist, whinney, lazy losers) who come to believe that the reason why they're in jail, behind in eduation, a single parent, under fire or under arrest for that matter is due only to the mass imbalance in public treatment of race need to wake up and get their s"""t together. Yes, raciail prejudices exist, yes there are racist deushes out there who are stuck in the 40s and judge people according to their skin, and yes, some of them are in public office and law positions. However, that is no excuse for you to sit around playing X-Box, ripping off the hard working decent Middle Easterns at 711 eating and feeding MacDonalds to your kids 3 times a day and then blaming the schools for not teaching health nutrition, or the blaming the white cop who happens to catch you doing 95 in a 30 in your suped up SUV.
You have to make priorities and take some accountability for your actions. And this is not a message just for black people, for remember back in the 50s-70s where black people where among the hardest working Americans because they knew they had to in order to get by. Obviously, I'm glad times have changed and I think we as a society have progressed, but too many of us (Jews, blacks, gays, whites, Hispanics, etc.) are quick to pull a race/religion card everytime we don't get what we want, someone says something we don't like, or things in life just overly don't turn out the way we had them planned in our tiny little self-indulgent, close minded out of touch minds.
Sharpton, Jackson...etc....Cosby and respectable Black Americans such as him are onto something and will expose you for the perverted racial pimps that you are who never want to admit that maybe...just maybe you and those like you are products of environment, home life, life style, and your own undeveloped and retarded sense of duty, American pride, and personal responsibility. |

I bought this book and i really enjoyed reading it. Bill Cosby spoke the truth about ignorant poor blacks and i agree with everything he said. I'm so tired of ignorant black men always laughing at and dissing positive blacks. I've been dissed most of my life by ignorant black men who aren't men because they act like boys. I've been dissed because i've always been quiet, i don't have any friends and i don't have a girlfriend. I like to read, listen to r&b and rap music, and watch tv shows and movies. I'm not really into socializing with people because most people only wanna get in your business and talk about you behind your back. I've been teased and laughed at by ignorant blacks at previous jobs i've had because of the way iam and that's not right. I've had to quit several jobs because of these ignorant blacks. I don't go to work to make friends with people and get in people's business. I go to work to do my job and go home.
Anyway getting back to the book, i think Cosby did a very good job giving poor ignorant blacks information on how they can make their lives better if they read and educate themselves. Unfortunately the sad thing is the people Bill is trying to reach, they won't purchase this book and read it because it's not important to them. Selling drugs, wearing baggy clothes, having lots of sex, not going to school, killing blacks and dissing blacks, listening to ignorant uneducated rappers is more important to ignorant poor blacks. Bill said some true stuff about black public schools. I think black public schools are a joke because most of the black kids at school aren't interested in learning and they only come there to diss positive kids who wanna learn and get into fights. This is a sad situation that will never end at black public schools. Bill does need to deal with reality about black public schools. Getting a education and reading is very important to having a good life but the good black kids that want a education can't learn in a environment that's terrible when they're constantly getting bullied and laughed at. This is a serious situation that needs to get dealt with by the principals of these bad schools. I suggest that the principals need to expel these bad ignorant kids from school so they can see how hard it is to survive on the streets when you have no education and the parents of these knuckleheads need to discipline their kids and whip their butts when they act up. If that happened more often, then these bad kids would change their ways. You got a lot of terrible parents who are scared of their kids and they don't discipline them. These terrible parents don't need to have kids in the first place if they aren't gonna be a good parent. |
