"Intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain, but simply points the way."
"Giving opens the way to receiving."
"We cannot always control our thoughts, but we can control our words, and repetition impresses the subconscious, and we are then master of the situation."
"The game of life is a game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accuracy." ...
Florence Scovel Shinn provides an object lesson in the power of personal reinvention. She took the personal defeat of a failed marriage in middle age, and transmuted it into the triumph of becoming a respected New Thought practitioner. Ms. Shinn's books are gathered here in one umbrella, in a good presentation with useful biographical material. Many of her examples are derived from the Bible, and adapted to our personal situations. One such case is blowing down the walls of Jericho. The walls of Jericho represent our fears which need to be dissolved. Her writing style is fascinating and never dull. One of the many stories in this book is the inner meaning of Snow White, and Ali Baba.
Her writing style is a little archaic, but paradoxically it makes her words sink in even more, and the perceptive truths in these books are both timeless and modern. - From quoting Robert and Richard

Florence Scovel Shinn was an artist and a metaphysics teacher in New York in the early part of the 20th century. Her books are truly incredible. They are relatively short, but they are profound. In her books she shows that we can enjoy a winning streak of health, prosperity, and happiness. She shares real-life stories with us from her many clients to illustrate how positive attitudes and affirmations invariably succeed in making one a "winner" in life -able to control life's conditions and release abundance through a knowledge of spiritual law. Florence Shinn is one of last century's most popular Success teachers. Apparently, she had quite a following in her "heyday" too, for her lectures were well attended and her books were popular not only in America, but also abroad.
Florence Scovel was born Septemer 24, 1871, in Camden, New Jersey. Her mother was the former Emily Hopkinson of Pennsylvania. Her father was Alden Cortlandt Scovel, and he practiced law in Camden. Besides Florence there was an older daughter and younger son. Florence was educated in Philadelphia at the Friends Central School and studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1889 to 1897. It was there that she met her future husband, Everett Shinn (1876 - 1953), who was a fairly celebrated painter of impressionistic canvases and realistic murals. Although Florence was educated at the art Academy, her pen and ink drawings are the result of her natural talent and not technical training.
Shortly after Florence's graduation from the Academy, she and Everett were married. The Shinns moved to New York City where they pursued separate careers in art. Everett was interested in the theatre and not only designed and painted for it but built a small theatre in the courtyard behind their studio home at 112 Waverly Place, near Washington Square. He organised the Waverly Players and wrote three plays in each of which Florence played the title role.
Before World War one she was an illustrator of popular children's literature in magazines and books. In 1912, after fourteen years of marriage, Everett requested a divorce.
In 1925, having been unable to find a publisher for "The Game of Life and How to Play It" she published it herself. "Your Word is Your Wand" was published in 1928 and "The Secret Door to Success" was published in 1940 shortly before her death on October 17, 1940. The "Power of the Spoken Word" is a compendium of her notes, gathered by a student and published postumously in 1945.
Florence Scovel Shinn had the ability to explain her success principles and how they work in an entertaining and easy-to-read style. By sharing real-life stories she illustrates how positive attitudes and affirmations invariably succeed in making one a "winner" in life, able to control life's conditions and release abundance through a knowledge of spiritual law.
Ms. Shinn passed on to a broader sphere in the "game of life" in 1940, but through her artistry and inspired writings has left an indelible mark on the canvas of life on planet earth which will live on to broaden the horizons of men and women the world over for generations to come. - From www.florencescovelshinn.wwwhubs.com

Florence Shinn is not as well known as she should be. She was an American artist, Metaphysics teacher and author, who lived from 1871-1940.
The four books contained in this collection are her best and are full of profound wisdom that bears reading and re-reading. They also have a remarkable and rare property: dipping into them at random in times of need, very often turns up just the truth or solution that you require.

This tremendous book was given to me by a great friend over thirty years ago. I'm not religious and felt uncomfortable at first with all the references to God so I substituted "The Power" instead, which works for me. However, the life lessons she so eloquently and yet simply tells are truly invaluable. When things start to go wrong either in my life or in my thinking I trot out The Game of Life and read it again to put myself on track. Although I used to give this book to friends I found that most of them didn't read it so now I tell them about the book and let them buy it for themselves if they're really interested. I've never seen reviews for a book that ALL give it five stars, but it deserves it. Mrs. Shinn still influences many with her wonderful insights. |

Thanks Florence. You and Sarah Ban Breathnach changed my life. I will/can never go back. This is a great book, but if you are not "biblical" it could be a tad (I said tad!) of a turn-off. If that is the case, then read Shakti Gawain's Creative Visualization OR Louise Hay. They are all really the same books just written at different times.

I was introduced to this marvelous piece of literature in 1999 and since that time in a multi-level effect, I have introduced it to over three hundred people. It is the most profound spirtual/inspirational book I have ever read, other than the Bible. In fact, it helped me to understand and appreciate the Scriptures more fully. As the late Dr. Norman Vincent Peale wrote,..." that he had long used her teachings and found them to work" is an understatement. Whenever I give this book as a gift, I inscribe it with the following text..." for edification and application." When the principles of God's word are applied to the letter, the manifestation is instantaneous. I am so glad that I've learned the "secret" (via Florence Scovel Shinn)of how to (play) the "Game of Life," carefully (use) "Your Word is Your Wand," (watched) the "Power of the Spoken Word" and (implemented)"The Secret Door to Success." Life has never been better and my relationship with God is getting to be what it's supposed to be; faith and trust. |

"The Game of Life" -and how to play it- has to be the greatest book on positive thinking ever written! This little book was introduced to me by a friend and my life has changed since the first day I opened it. I suffered from various illness such as Hypertension and Respitory problems. When I read this book it taught me to let go of the anger and hatred in my life. By doing so, I also let go of the illness in my body & the clutter in my mind. This book set me free from the burdens of a hard pain-filled life.
I learned a lot about God and man as being one in the spirit. This brought me so close to God that I could feel His spirit with me when I prayed. "The Game of Life..." taught me how to use the power of words to heal my body, mind, and spirit. For that, I will be forever grateful to Florence Scovel Shinn.
If you are faced with mounting problems and your whole world seems to be tumbling down around you, you need to read this book! If you feel as though you cannot go on and like you have no one, you need to read this book! If you feel unloved or that God does not love you, you need to read this book! |
