Young Nancy, like her literary predecessors Eloise and Olivia, is a glamour queen dropped into a boring world-Nobody in my family is fancy at all. They never even ask for sprinkles. She determines to rescue her relatives from their humdrum existence by giving them lessons and accessorizing their mundane wardrobes. A situation that is charming when observed by adults in real life doesn't translate into a successful picture book. Children's pretending to be fabulous creatures is appealing when it is innocent and unforced. This book, despite Glassers wonderfully energetic artwork, is ultimately a story told by adults for adults.

In this adorable (that's a fancy way of saying "cute") book we meet Nancy (who loves to be fancy) and her very plain family. When Nancy gets a "stupendous" idea (that's a fancy word for "great") to teach her family to be fancy they can't wait to get started. This is a wonderful story that speaks to the heart of every little girl with a "fancy" flair. It tells us that it's ok to be a little different and to share ourselves with the ones we love most - and when things don't go exactly as we plan, our family is always there to pick us back up because they love us. Beautifully illustrated by Robin Priess Glasser, Jane O'Connor's story is brought to life and given another layer of depth that speaks to even the youngest of readers. This is my 3 year-olds favorite book, in fact she has given it as a gift to many of her friends. Fancy Nancy is a book I can relate too, even thirty plus years after being a little girl who would have loved to have my "fanciness" appreciated by my family! I appreciate the wisdom and creativity of our little protagonist - she is a good peer role model for the young picture-book set.
I am buying two copies - one for my seventy-three year old mother who is a Fancy Nancy herself and also for myself... my children may borrow it to read, but I will keep it in my room to read-aloud and laugh and laugh and laugh!
Oh - a special nod, too, for the "fancy" illustrations. Loved each and every one. |

Maybe not every, but most girls, young and old, are going to relate to this Nancy. She has style and a mind of her own, and isn't afraid to show and share it! She's so cute and funny and in the end, a real girl, like us all, with a simple message that it doesn't matter if you put it out there when those who love you support you no matter if you fall flat on your face! |
