"You have only one life - make it a good one.” – Randy Gilbert The road to success is a road of many challenges and yes, even failures. Many people perceive failure as a negative and this perception stops them in their tracks. Randy Gilbert is a master at explaining how we can first recognize failure, pinpoint the problem, and then chart our course from this vantage point. The book has four parts that include 21 strategies for recognizing and overcoming failure.
The only other book I have read on the subject of using failure to gain success is in John Maxwell's book, Failing Forward. I keep this book by my bed. In "Success Bound," there are many personal stories from the author that are heartwarming and come from a genuine place of experience and knowledge. The book is filled with advice and excerpts from people like Napoleon Hill, Bill Cosby, Anthony Robbins, and John Maxwell, just to name a few.
In the bible, King Solomon asked for wisdom. Randy Gilbert has so many inspirational and wonderfully wise quotes from the bible, that he must be following in King Solomon's footsteps. Rkandy's integrity and humble- ness in achieving human success on this planet is a true indication of a capable leader. He gives credit where credit is due. "Work to rid yourself of the feeling of having to be perfect when you launch into a project. This type of fear will drive you away from those who want to help you accomplish your goals." This statement speaks volumes to the reader, just as many of the lessons in this wonderful book speak to you on the journey to success. I will keep a copy of this book by my nightstand for the times I feel that insatiable need to be perfect, which makes me limit myself in the process. The book contains 21 strategies that look at the benefits and psycho- logical challenges of trial and error. I found each of them to be very helpful. Mr. Gilbert uses personal examples especially well to bring his points home. He is also very well read, and appropriately and con- siderately refers to many other fine books. As a result, Success Bound is a great bargain and time saver. It distills the best of over 2 dozen books into one short, easy-to-read one. Unlike many authors who make such references, Mr. Gilbert has the gift of making the material fresher and easier to use than the original. One particularly helpful section explains how to overcome bad thinking habits so that you can make better decisions. Very nice!
The end of the book is about freedom to live and to love. There is even a bonus section at the end of the book that is priceless and gives me faith, not just in this book and its words, but also in Randy Gilbert's character. I am motivated to pass this book on to others and to follow the steps of this great leader in our world today! Unlike most books about success, this one is aimed at all parts of your life. It deals with religious faith, family, raising children, relationships with others, as well as career issues. If you are a Christian, you will probably especially enjoy the Biblical bonus which explains how accepting spiritual failure is essential to your soul being saved. You can supplement this book by reading advanced studies of what are the cutting edge practices in your field of interest. By combining that knowledge of what to start trying with an attitude that welcomes learning from your experiences, you'll be unstoppable and your heart will be filled with joy.

Reading Randy Gilbert's book is like having a relaxed conversation with a compassionate, wise personal coach who offers sage advice. Every chapter is chockfull of nuggets of wisdom plus great stories that get the point across.
Randy's known as "Dr. Proactive," a perfect description for someone whose quest for excellence has taken him on an exciting journey bound for success. He knows full well that success doesn't just land on your shoulders; if you want success, you have to be proactive about achieving it.
One of the keys to success, as explained in Success Bound in great detail with beautiful simplicity and directness, is managing failure. Every chapter boldly addresses failure head-on. Randy draws from his own experiences serving in the Coast Guard, home-schooling his children, living in Hawaii, and consulting for different organizations. But he also brings in many other people and voices, tapping into their wisdom and building upon it.
The chapters are well-named and describe the content perfectly. Each chapter title is actually a strategy. These are just a few of the strategies you'll find in Success Bound: "Always fail forward toward your goals." "Turn criticism of failure into a building block of success." "Be patient with your failures." I especially enjoy the key points listed at the end of each chapter. These points summarize the content beautifully. Once I've finished a chapter, I like to go back and review these points frequently.
Success Bound is very well done and well-worth reading. If you need a lift, a little hope to put you back on the right track, and some gentle but sage guidance, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it for everyone seeking a higher quality of life!
