MSL Pointer Review:
A Million Little Pieces is an uncommonly genuine account of a life destroyed and a life reconstructed. It is also the introduction of a bold and talented literary voice.

From the get-go, [Frey's] book sets itself a part, its narrative unspooling in short, unindented paragraphs and barely punctuated sentences whose spare, deadpan language belies the horror of what he's describing – a meltdown dispatched in telegrams. |

One of the best stories of transformation I've ever read. . . . Anyone who has ever felt broken and wished for a better life will find inspiration in Frey’s story. This won't be the last we’ll hear of him. |

Again and again, the book delivers recollections that leave the reader winded and unsteady. James Frey's staggering recovery memoir could well be seen as the final word on the topic. |

One of the most compelling books of the year… Incredibly bold…Somehow accomplishes what three decades' worth of cheesy public service announcements and after-school specials have failed to do: depict hard-core drug addiction as the self-inflicted apocalypse that it is. |

A Million Little Pieces is this generation's most comprehensive book about addiction: a heartbreaking memoir defined by its youthful tone and poetic honesty. Beneath the brutality of James Frey's painful process of growing up, there are simple gestures of kindness that will reduce even the most jaded to tears. Very few books earn those tears - this one does. It will have you sobbing, laughing, angry, frustrated, and most importantly, hopeful. A Million Little Pieces is inspirational and essential. A remarkable performance. |

I read this book before the controversy surrounding it...I picked it up because the title caught my eye. And now in light of recent events I couldn't care less if he really went through everything in the book. Whether its fiction or non, I could care less. I loved the book. I read it as someone telling a story and it didn't matter to me if the person telling it was real or not. |

Despite of what people say about this book I bought it anyway and I read it and I think it is one of the best books I have ever read.
James - Jim - you deserve a lot of respect for staying sober and manage your life the way you did. I am married to someone who is sober since 15 years and I am very proud of him because out of all these addicted people there are not too many who accomplish what you did by staying sober, out of trouble and being "good."
And I hate those peolpe who have nothing better to do than investigate every little sentence in this book... I truly believe that most of this book is true and it is all a matter of "interpretation" of how things are, how something happened and how you feel. The sun is always shining even when it is cloudy ! Lay it out the way you want.
I like this book a lot and I have bought the "My friend Leonard" as well a few days ago and I will read this book, too.
Good Luck to you, Mr. Frey !

I read A Million Little Pieces before the big Smoking Gun controversy. I always assumed that Frey's story had been fictionalized (at least a little) to raise the intensity of the story (although not to the extent it actually was).
If you haven't read A Million Little Pieces because it isn't a an actual memoir, I suggest that you disregard the controversy. The hype around this book was well founded, regardless of whether it is a true memoir or not. Frey draws heavily on his own experiences as an addict but obviously realized that the `real story' of his rehab lacked the necessary drama. Frey punches things up with a dentistry torture scene, a forbidden romance, and a daring rescue from a crack house. The fictional Frey has an edgy darkness: he's misunderstood - he's a bad-boy. The real Frey, on the other hand, appears to be something of a screw-up with a weak character and low self esteem (and yet, a talented writer).
The bottom line is; Frey has written a great novel. Despite the liberties taken with the truth, Frey understands what it feels like to be an addict. His unusual writing style, with its lack of punctuation, repetition, and free flowing narrative are well suited to the story. I found it to be powerful, compelling, and raw when I first read it (and thought it was mostly true). Knowing now that A Million Little Pieces is mostly fiction hasn't changed my opinion of the book. James Frey has written a great first novel. Forget the controversy, believe the hype, and read this novel.

I have read this book and there is a lot of hype about the "truth" contain within. However, "truth" is relative. As a former crack addict, I can tell you this book is well-written and reflects the hell of drug use.
In addition, it was recommended by a fellow user to me. He said the book changed his life (for the better). So, to me, if this book rings that "true" to those of us who have lived it and can help even one person, then this man should be congratulated not smeared! I loved it. It IS TRUE and I have recommended it time and time agin to others...
James - Bless You - The kid is still sober an expecting his first child!

I don't care what Oprah says, whether she wants him in her club or not, and I certainly don't care if James Frey embellished or lied or made the whole thing up. I read this book two years ago and back then I thought it was amazing and I still do today. It drags you in and you can feel the character's addiction. The writing is great, the way it's all one big rambling paragraph, with no indication of who is actually speaking. I adored this book and will continue to feel this way for the rest of my life. I will buy every book Frey publishes because a good story by a good author = a good book. |
