I discovered Edward Eager's books when I was about 7 and fell in love with them. My first quest was to find and read all of his books (unfortunately there are only seven). My second quest, which took me 15 years, was to OWN all of these books. Like the reader above, I have found few people of my age who have read these marvelous books, of which Half Magic is the first and which introduces the reader to characters who appear in the other books. What I liked most about Eager's books were the plays on words and the overlapping. The children in the books love to read and are always "ordinary" children who happen upon magic. I admit I'm still on the lookout for talking toads, wish -granting turtles, and talismans that look like nickels but aren't. Then follow the threads to the other books that Eager introduces you to.

When I was a kid, I loved Edward Eager's books. Now that my own "kid" is 21 and in college, I still love Edward Eager's books. So does he! It's been decades since I read Half Magic for the first time and the story has stayed with me. Four children find a magic talisman and go on wonderful adventures. The concept is simple and the story captures you easily. There is no wizardry, no scary characters. Just real kids stumbling upon real magic and what happens to them. And on that note I will recommend another Eager book Seven Day Magic which is based on that very premise. Please read these books. They are timeless and lovely.

I read all of Edward Eager's books when I was a child and I have been reading them at least once a year ever since. If you haven't read any of them, start with Half Magic. Four children-Jane, Mark, Katherine and Martha-find a magic nickel. The nickel gives the wisher only half of what he or she wishes for-which means that every magic adventure always turns out a little odd. The characters are fantastic. I come from a family which has the exact same structure as the children in Half Magic and I always saw my older sisters and brother in Jane, Katherine and Mark. I'm sure my siblings also saw me in Martha. Even if you don't come from a family like Martha's, you will recognize the characters immediately. I can't recommend this highly enough. If you haven't read it, order it immediately.

This is Edward Eager finest piece of fantasy combined with much humor and a taste of whimsy. The influence of E. Nesbit is unmistakable in the structure of the book but with a much lighter touch and purpose. This is not high fantasy but it delighted me as a child on a summer day sitting in the grass and sending me soaring away on a cloud of adventure. The idea of getting half a wish is an inspired concept and this idea is not let down by the author as he puts it to magical and imaginative use throughout the work. His work as a lyricist serves him well in the writing as some passages feel like light verse. A wonderful book.

I have been reading this more or less my entire life. It is one of those books that cannot be improved upon; it is first-rate fantasy, and believable to kids-and yet its appeal does not rest on that but on the four siblings' rapport with one another. While they are having a magical holiday, their practical (if usually misguided) use of the magic nickel is mostly to deal with family troubles. Enjoy, and give to your kids.
