MSL Pointer Review:
Cleverly written, light and humorous, Dan gives us a fascinating look into the motivation behind our every-day behaior and "explains" some of the quirks we see in ourselves and others. |

One of the latest trends in 21st century psychology is focused on the many individuals who are not mentally ill but can enhance their level of happiness. Gilbert's book is tremendously appealing for those searching for happiness and wondering why they have not yet found it. Many readers, however, find the book does not take the next step, which is to identify the things that actually do make people happy. My suggestion is to consider also reading works by Seligman on "Authentic Happiness." The combination of "Stumbling on Happiness" and "Authentic Happiness" is very powerful. Even on its own, "Stumbling" is one of the best books I've ever read. My disappointment with Gilbert has been in his other writings which I cannot recommend. While "Stumbling on Happiness" is unbiased and based on actual scientific evidence, much of Gilbert's writing is laced with his own religious beliefs which are based in secular humanism. When he sticks to his area of expertise, though, he has a lot to offer. |
