I genuinely like this book because it causes the reader to BE the qualities of a leader. It addressed character, charisma, commitment, communication, competence, courage, discernment, focus, generosity, initiative, listening, passion, positive attitude, problem solving, relationships, responsibility, security, self discipline, servanthood - to get ahead put others first, teachability - keep leading - keep learning, and vision.

This book will show you that every leader is a leader first to themselves, by integrating the above qualities into our consciousness, and walking our talk with others, and especially within our own selves.

I recommend that the reader seeks to BE these qualities, and to integrate them into a positively focused life - from the inside out.

This book is a wonderful contribution to embrace the highest qualities of genuine leadership, sans the ego's need to try to get others to follow you, but simply to be joyously immersed in BEING you.

Highly recommended to bring out the leader in you.

Dr. John Maxwell offers clearly defined and timely advice for leaders. This resource is based on ethical leadership and other foundational truths. You may refer to this motivational and inspiring resource numerous times in your career.

I have read all of John C. Maxwell's books and can recommend them to everyone. This one, "The 21 Indispensable Qualities Of A Leader", is about character. I did find this one useful, too. However, as one who has probably read everything on the subject over the years, I have to suggest that you also read the book that is becoming the premier standard on character, "West Point: Character Leadership Education, A Book Developed From The Readings And Writings Of Thomas Jefferson" by Norman Thomas Remick. It's the only book I have ever read that reaches the heart and answers the questions, "What is character?" and "What is leadership?".

John Maxwell has changed my life and revolutionized my interior design business. Thanks to his tips on leadership my sales team has almost doubled its productivity, due largely to the cult of personality I have inspired in them. They have erected an effigy of my radiant image in the lobby and openly worship it. The public has reacted well to that particular initiative and have come flocking in droves to use our business or to lap up my utterances.

This book takes the reader from an understanding of the 21 qualities of a great leader to the implementation of the qualities required in the workplace. I recommend this book because it explains exactly what it takes to lead others. issues asuch as listening, problem-solving, cultivating better relationships with others, qualities of insecure leaders, improving teachability, servanthood, discernment and generosity are examined nicely.

Maxwell's title focuses on 21 qualities needed for successful leadership and devotes a chapter summarizing each quality. While I tend to agree with others that Maxwell's books sometimes can be simplistic and full of hype, this particular title is a timely read in light of the... failures the world has seen in the areas of politics, business, and religion.

Some of the helpful pointers Maxwell offers include:

    1. Ways to improve your listening.
    2. Improving your problem-solving ability.
    3. 3 things needed to cultivate better relationships with others.
    4. Traits of insecure leaders.
    5. Ways to improve your teachability.
    6. Ways to improve your servanthood.
    7. Imroving your discernment.
    8. Cultivating generosity with others.

In my opinion, this title is better than some of Maxwell's other books because of the focus on character.

All in all, a good read. While Maxwell is an authority on leadership and has a readable writing style, there are better authors and books out there!

If you are not sure what leadership means this is the book to start knowing about it. Managing is not leadership, start with this book to find out what it really is.
  • Erieka (MSL quote), USA   <2007-07-03 00:00>

I have been changed by this book. Anybody who doesn't like this book is obviously one of the examples of a bad leader used in this book. I learnd how to become a better leader and how to motivate others who are accountable to me. Because of this book I have bought several of John Maxwell's books and I have made leaps and bounds in my personality. I recommend this book... especially for pastors!

The basic principles of leadership are character, hard work, and a focus on others. Multiply these by 7 and you have the 21 Indespensible Qualities. J. Maxwell's books are inspirational and if you're open to the message, they can be life changing. While reading this book my management style shifted a little and immediately there were favorable results as my co-workers began to feed off of my newfound leadership aspects. I highly recommend this text.
  • Joan (MSL quote), USA   <2007-07-03 00:00>

As a professor in Business and Management, this book is an often chosen title in my management and leadership courses. Perhaps initially because it is small, but all students inevitably end up commenting that they really appreciated the contents and learned a lot from it.

Leadership qualities are interesting phenomena, which can be replenished to an infinite degree. However, John Maxwell managed to highlight those qualities that are truly crucial toward leadership that will appeal to all categories of followers.

Encouraged by this book and many others, I published "The Awakened Leader: One Simple Leadership Style That Works Every Time, Everywhere." Readers who liked John Maxwell's works, and who want to remain informed of appropriate leadership in a time where globalization has become a part of our everyday life and has ignited increasing interdependency, multiplicity of mindsets and approaches, and multi-faceted workplaces, should take a look at this book.

"The Awakened Leader" presents a meta-leadership approach, which will guide you toward implementing the appropriate leadership style once you've assessed the situation, the followers, and the environment at hand. It is based on flexibility through open-mindedness, or wakefulness. And it completes the perspectives that Maxwell and other great leadership authors have presented us in the past decade: successful leadership of the self and others, based on proven trends of the past, the now, and the future.
