I must admit I needed a helping hand with my application. The Essays, GMAT, letters of recommendation... sometimes seems like an endless process where you never know if youre wasting your time since you have no guarantee of being accepted (especially at schools where it's getting ridiculously competitive). this book has guided me through the whole process.

First, the book gives you the confidence you need to keep faith. It outlines loads of testimonials of successul candidates (harvard, MIT, Berkeley, Columbia, kellogg...). When you read their stories, you feel that they were like you: people who had accomplished some stuff but obviously had doubts and weaknesses. Then, the game is how you present yourself and how you write succesful essays.

The key is that you should adapt your essays to the various school profiles. The authors have done an outstanding work on the top schools. There are about 50 pages per school outlining the differences between all the schools. If you want to be admitted to Stanford, you obviously don't say the same thing in your essays as if you want to be admitted to Columbia. The great thing about this book is that you get insider information. The other books I bought are just too general, stuff like "smile on the day of your interview"... this is more specific.

You read this book, and the profiles of the schools you want to apply to, and you feel that the game is easier than you thought.

This book was invaluable to me. Let's put it this way: I wasn't sure that I had what is took to get admitted! I found the whole admissions process real competitive and being accepted to Harvard and Wharton was more like a dream than a possible reality.

A GMAT teacher recommands me to buy this book. "Quite expensive but you won't regret it". good advice since I followed most of the advice especially for the schools I was targeting. For a lot of schools (Harvard, Berkeley, Columbia, Stanford, Chicago...), it displays anything you need to know... and to say... to get admitted. authors analyse essays of each school... it demystifies the questions, the traps, some good answers and loads of examples. The book is quite exhaustive: more than 600 pages but it is well organized, so it makes it pretty user-friendly.

Even if you do not feel that you can get in into the best business schools, it is not as difficult as most people think, all you need is Faith and a Good Method!

Applying to MBAs is no walk in the park. When i started the application process, I felt I had a couple of weaknesses (notably my GPA) and that if I didn't compensate, my chances of being admitted were quite slim. My GMAT teacher recommended me this book. Basically, this book has given me the savvy to boost my strengths and minimize my weaknesses. It contains about everything you need to make the best of your application: it's reassuring to read hear everything from the horse's mouth - successful candidates & admissions directors. The bit I've worked on the most is a self-marketing model from a guy who worked at P&G - really helped me define an overall marketing strategy. I'm looking at it as an investment that should (fingers crossed) pay dividends later on, given the difference in salaries between the top MBAs and the also-rans.

Looking back, I realize that my MBA application was both difficult and emotionally challenging. First I dared to consider whether an MBA course could be worth the time and investment to me. Then I struggled to identify the best MBA to apply to, the course which best complemented my interests and abilities. Finally I worried which would be the school where I would have the best chances of admission. Having selected a hard-to-enter school, I remember sitting up late at night reading parts of Getting the MBA Admissions Edge just to help me believe that, if I kept calm and worked through the problem one step at a time, one day I might win a place.

Throughout the process this book was my greatest support. At 600 pages it is incredibly comprehensive. It brims with great data, such as analyses of business school rankings from Business Week, US News, the Financial Times over a 15-year time frame with breakdowns by criteria such as specialty, salary and the biggest recruiters for each school. There are more than 150 samples of essays written by successful applicants with thorough coverage of the major do's and don'ts for each school. There is a step-by-step guide on "how to write essays that stand out from the crowd" the essay is your big opportunity to differentiate yourself from the thousands of other applicants and this guide was written by a former Proctor & Gamble employee who has re-applied powerhouse marketing techniques to the problem.

I guess it is because of such hard-hitting content that this book has come to be recommended by most admissions officers (Wharton, Columbia, UCLA, Stanford...), by so many top recruiters (McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, BCG...) and is loved by GMAT teachers as well. Yet now I am enrolled in my dream MBA, I do not think of the valuable in-depth analyses but remember this book as my most supportive friend at a very grueling time a friend to whom I owe this thank you now.

I feel like I need to stand up in front of a room full of people and say "I survived the MBA admissions process". Having just gotten thru the whole application nightmare I have to say that this book was an invaluable tool. I went to a great school for undergrad and now have the privilege of working for a large US investment bank (for argument's sake, let's call it Golden Sacks) so, theoretically, I've got the qualities that most top schools are looking for, but nobody can afford to be too complacent about the MBA application so I sat writing my essays with my Webster's on one side of me and my copy of Getting The Edge on the other. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone thinking about applying to a Top 10 school on account of the general, as well as school-specific, insider tips on applying. In particular, I liked the example essays, which were qualitatively different for each school, illustrating the need to not just rattle off the same old why-I'm-desperate-to-come-to-your-school type of essay. Well done, Messrs Symonds and Mendonca - your alma maters would be proud of you.

If you are hesitating about which schools to apply or if you have decided that you want to get into one MBA in particular (for me, it was Stanford and MIT), this book is a MUST buy. It will save you a lot of time since it will help you to make the right choices and will increase your chances of being admitted. This book has helped me throughout the entire process, from choosing the right school to getting admitted to the school of my choice. The essay section is really helpful since the authors make an in-depth analysis of about 100 essays from successful candidates. You should make sure that you are admitted to the best school possible since your salary upon graduation will be different according to the school. There is about $40,000 difference (salary upon graduation) between the upper-crust schools and schools which are just "good". Go for the best you can!
  • Brett Richmond (MSL quote), USA   <2007-02-23 00:00>

I have bought about 6 books on MBA preparation, attended an intensive GMAT test prep. center, taken private tuition for my essays, asked friends who got into Harvard, Berkeley and Wharton for their advice... but the bottom line is, the most helpful advice has come from Getting the MBA Admissions Edge. This book is worth every cent as it really gives you faith in yourself that you can make it. It helps you understand and play upon your strengths and weaknesses. One part in particular is just dynamite - for each school (Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, NYU...) they analyze typical essay questions (what the school wants to get out of the question, what the do's and the don't's are, sample essays from admitted candidates..). You've even got interviews with each of the Director of Admissions as well as insider views from successful candidates of each school reviewed. Basically it feels like you have access to the "mysterious black box" of the admissions process: it gives you the motivation (even if you have not scored 750+ at GMAT) and resolution you need to get you home and dry... and eventually you receive this letter that tells you that you have been admitted to your dream MBA!"
